LEGAL OFFICER I
JOB SUMMARY:
The Legal Officer I provides legal support, advice, and research to the organization to ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations. This entry-level professional role assists senior legal staff in preparing legal documents, reviewing contracts, managing legal correspondence, and supporting litigation and regulatory matters. Work is performed with guidance and reviewed by a Legal Officer II, or the Manager Legal Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts legal research on statutes, case law, and regulatory frameworks relevant to the Corporation’s business;
- Drafts, reviews, and edits contracts, agreements, MOUs, tenders, and other legal documents.
- Ensures that contractual terms protect the organisation’s legal and financial interests.
- Prepares and vets letters, notices, and other formal legal communications.
- Prepares correspondence, legal instruments, contracts and other documents relevant to the legal activities of the Corporation;
- Prepares research briefs, reports, and recommendations for senior legal personnel.
- Assists in preparing files and documentation for court matters, tribunals, and arbitration.
- Liaises with external attorneys and provides required documentation and updates.
- Attends court and other legal proceedings as required to support case management.
- Assists in monitoring changes in relevant legislation to ensure that the Corporation is compliant with all relevant statutes and regulations;
- Provides legal and business development research to support the introduction of new services or new modes of operations, when required;
- Ensures the maintenance of litigation files, register and calendar;
- Performance of any related duties as may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB) qualifications from a recognized institution;
- Legal Education Certificate (LEC) and/or Legal Practice Certificate (LPC);
- At least three (3) years similar experience;
- Additional qualifications in Business Administration will be considered an asset;
- Comprehensive knowledge of Civil Procedure, Contract Law, Property Law, Insurance Law and applicable legislation within Trinidad and Tobago;
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant statutory regulations pertaining to public transportation.
Any comparable combination of training will be considered.
